Shou sugi ban (焼杉板) is an 18th century Japanese method developed in Kyoto to treat cedar siding to make it weatherproof. The technique involves charring the wood surface to render it a deep charcoal-black. It’s now becoming popular for indoor furniture & art. It’s been elevated to an art form with several techniques available to the skilled artisan to make the wood more, or less, black.

We create the shou sugi ban effect on a custom basis. Please contact us if you are interested in dining, coffee, side tables — or sculpture. Cutting boards coming soon!
