ABOUT OUR SINGAPORE WOOD ITEMS
In 2016 we made a goal for our Singapore based carpentry business to use sustainable, grown-in-the-city wood that was cut only during landscaping work.
We wanted wood that didn’t contribute to deforestation, habitat destruction, or waste fuel to import.
Using local wood is only possible because, in the 1950s during the city’s rapid growth, Singapore National Parks planted the world’s finest tropical hardwoods along all new roads & urban developments island wide.
Now, these African Mahogany, Angsana, Tembusu and other exotic trees are endangered in their natural habitats. In Singapore however, they’ve grown to beautiful 40m high mature trees that need regular trimming, & sometimes must be cut for changes in the urban layout.
Carpentry in an ultra-modern city of 5 million, best known for finance & tech, has unique challenges. After years of sorting the logistics, & after drying our first batch of wood for 2 years, we launched our 100%-made-in-Singapore items in 2019.
Our production is green & lean. We design our products to last for generations. In years to come, these solid hardwood items can be refinished, not thrown away. We’ve designed products made from small branches or entire trees. Cut-offs are reused to make smaller and smaller items down to drinks-coasters.
From tree planting to hand finishing, 100% of our process happens within 20KM of our factory (though it took 70 years to complete the cycle!) Our craftsmen & women live nearby. Most of our items have never been in a box, wrapped in plastic, shipped or treated with the chemicals required to import wood.
We are proud to be achieving our goal of local & green production in Singapore. We are proud to innovate in our old-world profession of carpentry.
We’ve kept the finest aspects of traditional carpentry, added valuable modern techniques, & made respect for the environment & sustainability the cornerstone of our design process.
